Yitzhak Rabin to President Clinton re: Middle East Peace

750000 WK7 Prime Minister August 16, 1994 5QPM.871 Dear Mr. President, Having returned to Jerusalem from the moving visit to Washington, I am writing to thank you for everything that you and your Administration did for us and for the cause of peace in the Middle East last week and, indeed, since your inauguration. It is not a mere coincidence that for the second time within less than a year the White House hosted a major act of Arab-Israeli reconciliation. You personally have invested your leadership, stature and time in advancing the Middle East peace process. You have inspired your Administration to devote a generous portion of its attention and resources to the same end. There has not been a single request addressed to you with a view to advancing the peace process, which has been turned down. You have always been available to make the difference. As I go over the events which led to the signing of the Washington Declaration it is clear to me that this breakthrough was made possible by the pursuit of two tracks of diplomacy: the role played by the United States, and the direct give-and-take between Jordan and Israel. As we continue the peace process, the same two avenues can produce new breakthroughs. We are determined to proceed.
