Personal
My dear George,
Please forgive the informality but I wanted to
talk to you as a longtime friend and a person who
has ministered the gospel to you and your
wonderful family.
I have been in Europe now for a number of days,
and I have sensed something of what is going on in
America politically.
I have wanted to be of help but felt, under the
circumstances because of my calling to proclaim
the gospel to people of all persuasions, that I
should keep quiet politically. Knowing you, I am
certain that you agree with me. Your
identification with certain leaders of so-called
II
fundamentalism made it a little more difficult for
me also, even though I know, respect, and have
Christian love for each one of them. Yet the path
the Lord has called me to these years has been
more down the middle. ministering to people of all
persuasions--whether they be Jewish, Catholic or
Protestant--and in most cases I have had the
support of these various groups. I am certain
that without further explanation you understand my
personal dilemma.
There is no family in America that Ruth and I love
more than the Bush family-- which began with your
father and mother many years ago. I think both
your wife and mother are two of the great saints
of God that we know. The times we have spent with
you at Kennebunkport are highlights of our lives,
and to know your children, inlaws, and
grandchildren has made us feel that we have almost
been accepted as a part of the family!
I wish the average American could know you as we
feel that we know you.
I still feel at this date, before the debates
begin, that you have an excellent chance of being
re-elected. However, in my prayers I have to say,
as Jesus did at Gethsemane before He faced the
cross on Calvary, "Thy will be done."

I love America and believe in its institutions,
but I also see storm clouds on the horizon that,
with your experience, you would be superb in
handling. I have written a book that will come
out in a few weeks entitled, Storm Warning. Here
in Europe I feel that we are seeing history repeat
itself, with many of the same elements that were
present at the beginning of World War I.
Many years ago I got to know Ross Perot very well.
Ruth's brother is his pastor and has performed the
weddings of all of his daughters. He is bringing
an element into the campaign that may muddy the
I
waters for you, but it may also work the other
way.
I just wanted you to know that we love you,
respect you, honor you, and thank God for you and
your leadership but, in a very personal way, are
grateful for your friendship and the many things
you have done and said to encourage my ministry.
Ruth loves Barbara like a sister.
I wanted to assure you that in these debates, we
will be praying for you night and day that God
will give you wisdom. In a way, we will be
praying the same for the other candidates because
who knows what the Sovereign God has in mind?
Unfortunately, I will be in Europe until after the
election, though I have already cast my absentee
ballot.
We have had many crises in American history and
somehow God has seen us through all of them. He
will not fail us this time.
I hope. in your private moments, you will put the
entire thing in the hands of God.
Cordially,
The Bill President
