Poem, Leland M. Mower to Franklin Roosevelt

An Appreciation of Our President In nineteen hundred thirty two When people saw the light They selected Mr. Roosevelt To help them in their plight. His critics said, "He will not last You'll find within the year People will forsake his side And at his name will jeer! But let us see what came to pass In these four hectic years To make us all smile once again And wipe away our tears. Many home owners were in distress About to lose their homes, in fact When you, Mr. President, came to their aid With the helpful Home Loan Act. Bankers were not infallible We found to our dismay To right existing ills, you called A Banking Holiday. The backbone of our nation is our youth And I'm sure all will agree That one of the greatest acts of all Was creation of the C. C. C. And now the crowning deed of all Which all hopes will fulfill For in the early days of fall Was passed the Social Security Bill. The poor man's friend, on this we plan So also does our richer brother But best of all, you're an American And in it's ideals don't falter. Tho' I was born in the State of Maine (And I'm mighty proud of that) Your works have wrought a miracle I'M now a Democrat. Leland M.
