It is an award conferred on people who have not been afraid to raise their voices in support of a fairer marketplace, a safer workplace, and a more just society. Among those to whom the League has given this award in the past are Averell Harriman, Philip A. Hart, Esther Peterson, Herb Block, Marian Wright Edelman, Lady Bird Johnson, Claude Pepper, and last year to Senator Jay Rockefeller and to Charlayne Hunter-Gault.
