458248 PP005-01 THE WHITE HOUSE August 8, 2001 Mrs. Rosalynn Carter The Carter Center One Copenhill 453 Freedom Parkway Atlanta, Georgia 30307 Dear Rosalynn, Thank you for your letter inviting me to participate in the Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy. Although I am unable to join you, I salute The Carter Center for its dedication to mental health and particularly this year's focus on the needs of children. Along with my thanks for your work on behalf of the nation's children, I send my best wishes for a productive symposium. I hope our paths cross again soon. With best wishes, LawaBul 010813 **** ROSALYNN CARTER 17 July 2001 Dear Laura, The Carter Center Mental Health Program holds an annual symposium dedicated to mental health policy in our country. Over 200 national leaders from all the stakeholder groups related to mental health participate each year. For the last three years, we have focused our attention on the United States Surgeon General's initiatives in the area of mental health. In 1999 our symposium was titled Setting the Stage for the Surgeon General's Report, and last year we focused on reducing disparities in mental health care for minorities in our country, in line with the upcoming Surgeon General's Report on Ethnic Minorities and Mental Health. On November 7 and 8, 2001, we will hold the Seventeenth Annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy, Youth in Crisis - Uniting for Action: Report of the Surgeon General's Conference on Children's Mental Health. An important arena in which the health of children is fostered is that of preschool and early childhood education, which I know is an area of great interest to you. We would be honored to have you participate in this year's symposium and would provide you with a forum for expressing your ideas regarding the education of America's children and the positive effects of quality education on the mental health of our youth. It would be wonderful to have the opportunity to meet with you again. I hope it will be possible for you to be with us. With warm best wishes, Sincerely, Rosadynn Carter ONE COPENHILL . 453 FREEDOM PARKWAY ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30307 Mrs. Laura Bush The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C. 20500
