6 Portis, Kansas 67474 February 11, 1970 The President The Whitehouse Washington, D. C. 20500 NM Dear Mr. President, Last Saturday afternoon I was watching professional bowling on television. One of the announcers said that you liked to bowl about once a week, and that you carried an average of 165. I have been bowling a number of years, and this winter my average has been 165 until this past week when I dropped to 164. I have been Postmaster here at Portis for twenty-six and one- half years. Last Sunday, the 8th of this month, I reached my seventieth birthday, and as you know, Civil Service says I must retire the last day of this month. The Postal Department frequently tells us that if we have ideas to suggest them. Hearing about your bowling abilities, and that your and my averages are almost identical, my idea is that I challenge you to a three-game bowling contest. Your and my paths may never cross where we may get together to have this contest, so I have another idea: we could bowl by mail and mail each other our bowling sheets to see how the contest came out. I realize my chances to win are slim, because your life history will show a determination to win, and you never give up. Mr. President, we pray to our Father in Heaven often that He will guide and direct you and your advisors in all of the decisions that you have to make, for there is no other way whereby you can succeed.
