Letter, Parriclee Jackson to Franklin Roosevelt

My dear President of The United States:- I was thinking today of the universe--what a spacious place it is a and what a mite I am, and still there is no room for me: Humbly I have at times made myself even much smaller than a mite, and yet there seems to be less room for me. This makes me feel very bad. My greatest desire is to please God in all my doings morning noon and night, and to do good unto everybody. God is very gracious to you. Do you think you could speak to Him for me? I will give you the outline of my life. I was born in West Virginia, May 24th 1890 to colored parentage. I have always been religiously inclined to deeper depth and higher heights in the Spiritual realm of life God-ward. Within myself, I have made a very successful point to the degree--I can face the world, spirit, soul and body without any moral regrets. At present, I have all the necessities of life but there is sòmething lacking. I am wondering if you will help me ? I know you can, if you will. All earthly power seemstto be in you your hands--and since it is I am sure you can and will make a TTTM IIII a great vacancy in my life. I am not a college graduate. I am no big per- son. I am just one who have been in touch with God and would like to share Him with others. Please read Isa. 61:1-4, and you will realize what I am trying to say. When you have read it--think over it prayerful and àsk God--the makèr of earth and sky-the sea and all that is in them is--help place me in some little re- sponsible position which will give me joy and peace in these my last fleeting days. I want my latter part of life to be the best as far as being a missionary in the great field. Ingathering of money is not my goal. I would be willing to do with just enough b to keep soul and body together, if I could only get some definite work to do. I have the gift from God to be able to adapt myself to almost any condition in life-let it be favorable or unfavor- able. As old as I am I would be willing to walk any reasonable distánce distance-cold or warm. I have winter apparel and all other necessii ities. I am not particular where I am placed so long as I am placed Please do not ignore me. Let your heart go out for me. I have no one who is interested in my ambition. I am alone. I lost my father a good many years ago. Since that time I have been doing domestic work. I am doing that kind of work now. I enjoy it very much. Through it all, my soul cries out to spend the rest of my days in His service regardless to bodily comfort.
