Letter, Mrs. Dorothy Byington Cates to Franklin D. Roosevelt

25-J L active Memphis, Tennessee, ms September 7, 1942 President Frenklin D. Roosevelt, Washington, D. C. Dear Mr. President: One week ago today, I was sworn into the WAAC # at Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia, and am so proud, may I take the liberty of reporting this important date in my life to you. I am the mother of four grown children, one son, age 26; three daughters of which two are twins, 25 years old; and a younger daughter age 19. I am also the grandmother of three lovely children. My son, a former employee of Dole Pineapple Company, located in Honolulu was on a golf course that fateful December 7th, 1941, and the reaction of the terrible raid on his life was instrumental in my taking the step of enrolling in the WAAC. My son is now an Ensign in the U. S. Navy stationed in Honolulu. His wife and baby have been evacuated and are now safe in our United States. May I take this opportunity to pledge to you personally my faith in our country and in you as our President, to perform any duty assigned to me during my enrollment in the WAAC.
