President Jimmy Carter
THE WHITE HOUSE
Washington, D. C.
Dear President Carter:
25 years ago I wrote a song adapting
Henry Longfellow's poem " I Heard the
Bells on Christmas Day".
Friday, December 21st, I heard you
eloquently quote from the poem on the
TV news.
Since the song was very successfully
recorded by Bing Crosy, followed by
Frank Sinatra and a host of other
stars, I thought you would like to
hear the interpretation by the 2 great
singers mentioned.
I wrote the song during the Korean War,
strongly feeling its appropriateness.
Little did I imagine it would be more
pertinent today in our Iranian crisis.
I have written many hits, and am best
known for "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
but none is as meaningful as "I Heard the
Bells on Christmas Day".
Most sincerely,
JDM/1t
