The Honorable Herbert Hoover,
Palo Alto, California.
Dear Mr. Hoover:
I am sure that millions of our people must rejoice
on the position that you have taken before the Federal Council
of Churches.
The Nazi menace is more than a threat against a par-
ticular people whom it dislikes. It is, as you say, an assault
on civilization itself. As a member of the persecuted race,
against whom Hitler Germany is directing its most vicious attacks
at the present time, I must confess to you that your speech was
indeed a revelation. I know many of our people misinterpreted
the picture shown in the press many months ago, showing you and
Herr Hitler on one picture. Many of our people, I am sure, were
under the impression, because of the publication of this photo-
graph, that you were sympathetic to the Nazi cause, and were hurt,
not knowing the true facts, because you have engaged your entire
public life in a great service to humanity.
Your latest utterance, in these days of darkness, is
indeed a great ray of light to all lovers of liberty and humanity,
including the people of which I am a part.
I hope a kind Providence will enable you, for many
years to come, to continue to be a benefactor of humanity.
Sincerely yours,
MMK/cm
