Dear Mr. President, I have much for which to thank you. I thank you, first, for appointing me as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. I had never imagined that I would have the opportunity to serve my country as a member of that revered institution. All I can pledge to you in return is that I will spend each of my years of service using whatever talents I may possess to serve the cause of equal justice under law. I also want to thank you on behalf of all women for making the historic decision to name a woman to the Supreme Court. My appointment has probably done more to give women confidence in true equal opportunity than a thousand speeches. The warmth and enthusiasm of women everywhere in support of your decision is proof of its symbolic significance. Finally, I want to thank you for honoring me on the day before my investiture with your lovely luncheon and your generous remarks at that time, as well as for your attendance at my investiture.
