C My dear Mr. President: I know that you are extremely busy and do not have time for unimportant matters. I am, however, taking the liberty as one of your friends and loyal supporters to bring to your attention a matter that seems to me quite important. Because of certain newspaper reports of the recent meeting of Democratic leaders it is being circulated in this community at least that you drank quite freely and many people are surprised and distressed. Your friends recall how on more occasions than one you have requested the good people to support you with their prayers and they find difficulty in reconciling your reported drinking with this fact. I believe you will agree with me that you cannot afford to alienate the church people who are supporting you. I trust, therefore, that it will be possible for you to counteract this very damaging report that is being circu- lated to your hurt.
