Letter from Dorothy Mlodinoff of Studio City, California, to President Gerald R. Ford Regarding Income Taxes

October 8, 1974 President Gerald Ford The White House Washington, D. C. con sur tax Mr. President: This morning as I was driving to work, I was listening to the newsstation in Los Angeles. I was extremely upset by what I heard. As a single person, I am already in the most heavily overtaxed category. This is a well known fact and the promise from our previous president, that single people would get a reduction in their taxes, was never fulfilled. Hearing the news that the current plans are to increase the tax by a 5% surcharge upset me greatly. Things are getting so expensive, one can barely make it. With this additional tax, I won't even have enough left to pay for my bare necessities like food, rent, utilities, gas for my car, etc. I had been taking a bus to work, but as I am sure you are aware, we have had a bus strike in L. A. for 58 days. Needless to say, I must drive, or I would be unable to get to work. It surely seems to me that the big companies who are now making higher profits than ever before in the history of the United States, should be the ones to pay the higher taxes. Perhaps if the loopholes for the big companies and the rich people were eliminated, things would be fairer.
