Letter from Daniel Praglin to President Harry S. Truman

Dear President Truman: This morning over Mutual Broadcasting Company I heard a rebroadcast of the House Un-American Activities Committee hearing. The writer, Dalton Trumbo, was on the witness stand. Mr. Trumbo was repeatedly denied the privilege of introducing evidence in his behalf into the record, while after he was dismissed from the stand Mr. Stripling was allowed to read evidence against Mr. Trumbo. This appears to me as a gross miscarriage of justice in the courts of the United States. This was the first broadcast of the Committee's hearings that I have listened to. As a consistent member of the Democratic Party for the last fifteen years and a veteran of World War II, I protest the activities of this Committee and the shocking mockery it presents.
