BISHOP WILLIAM scarlett
DYCE'S HEAD
CASTINE, MAINE
30, November, 1964
4952 S 030
Dear Mr. President,
BECEINED
In view of Mr. J. Edgar Hoover's scurrilous and
w/by
unwarranted attack on Martin Luther King, many of us wonder
if his usefulness as head of the F.B.I. has not been greatly
undermined, and come to an end.
His further assertion that in this racial issue
he is for States Rights, in which case the Negro in some
southern States could kiss his dream of Justice goodbye in-
definitely, lends much plausibility, if not credence, to Dr.
King's contention that Mr. Hoover and his men are a bit soft
in protecting the rights of Negroes in the South.
Certainly his intemperate accusation has serious-
1y lessened confidence in Mr. Hoover in the minds of many,
and his assertion of StatesRights in this issue has increased
distrust.
With highest regard and the best of wishes,
Ever yours,
ArliamScarlett
The President.
William Scarlett.
