Your Excellency:- During the stress of administrative duties, along with a campaign so magnified by the vicissitudes of political strife a word of cheer oftimes leavens the bitterness of attacks made by those who are being benefited even as they complain. In the face of such unfair and unjust criticism I admire the manner in which you carry on because I know how you must some- times feel. Atty. Alfred Collins and I formed the Roosevelt-Garner Club here during your first campaign. A fight was carried on against us because we supported the Democratic Party. That fight went so far as to seriously under- mine my practice but I had faith that you would improve conditions and my faith has been sustained. I am grateful because you have DR. T. We have revived th at Club and my courage to use my influence in your behalf has an added power. With you at the helm conditions are improving, and rather than the dire calamity predicted, you through your programs are surely raising the American standard to its rightful place. As I before said many of my race fought me in I932. Recently a white Republican handed me a copy of Promises and Performances, then proceeded to annihilate the Roosevelt Adminis- tration. Mr. President, I thank God that you can produce facts to back your arguments. Well, I used some of your thunder with such effective- ness that once again I was condemned for desert- ing the good Republican Party of my forefathers (though I have never voted the Republican ticket. In the midst of the unkind criticism my great pleasure was to see my wife slowly but surely conceede that you had not only fought the good fight but that you had routed the enemy. Now she is one of your staunchest supporters. DR. T.
