SECRETARY L OF THE COMMONWEALTH
The Honorable Jimmy Carter
President of the United States
The Whitehouse
Washington, D.C. 20510
My Dear President Carter:
In our last meeting you indicated to me that you would like
to know when I feel you are "doing things right." with your major
piece of election reform legislation I feel you certainly are doing
things right!
The greatest threat to our country is not another world power,
but the growing apathy that has pervaded our citizenry and kept Americans
away from the political process in increasing numbers. The steps you
have taken since your election, particularly regarding this legislation,
are vital in reversing that deplorable trend.
As you know, I have long been an advocate of universal suffrage--
direct election day access to the ballot by every qualified citizen of
this nation. The Universal Registration Act brings us one major step
closer to providing citizens with direct access and with the impetus to
use it.
You may be sure that I will be singing the praises of universal
registration the length and breadth of this nation. Any personal support
and assistance that I can render to you on behalf of this bill's passage
and enactment will be done without a moment's hesitation.
Kindest personal regards,
Sincerely,
C. CHE LORES DeLores Tucker
