The President and Mrs. Carter
The White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. President and Mrs. Carter:
My colleagues and I want to thank you for one of the most
meaningful experiences that we have had the occasion of
sharing. It was an occasion at which the spiritual pre-
sence of Martin Luther King, Jr. permeated the entire
atmosphere.
President Carter, you set the tone which made it easy for
the rest of the participants to follow. Both of you have
made The White House truly a home for all Americans. We
thank God for you, and we love you because you have dared
to be human.
The King Center's campaign to build Freedom Hall could not
have been launched from a more appropriate setting, both
symbolically and practically. I am sure that what you did
in support of the dream of the Center will indeed help make
it a reality.
Personally, I was inspired and greatly encouraged by the
response and the quality of persons who attended The White
House reception. Certainly working together, this group
representing thousands and perhaps millions of others, can
become a force in perpetuating the legacy of Martin Luther
King, Jr., thereby bringing us closer to the establishment
of the beloved community.
May the God of love, peace, justice, and mercy be with you
and continue to shower you with His rich blessings that you
may guide our nation and the world into the day that the
lamb and the lion will lie down together and none shall be
afraid
and nations shall not study war anymore.
Yours for a world in which nonviolence will reign,
Cretta
