Letter from Carmela Stanton and Six Other Individuals to President Gerald R. Ford Regarding US Aid to Vietnamese Refugees

Dear Mr. President: We join our fellow Americans in expressing our objections to importing 149,00 Vietnamese refugees into the United States. The disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. These disadvantages are as follows: 1. Our current unemployment is 8.2%. We do not need an additional 149,000 unemployed refugees to support. 2. Free housing, medical care, food, and schools will be provided to these people at our expense. 3. Welfare is already bursting at its seams. This additional burden will explode it. 4. The majority of these 149,000 people are young. They will increase in numbers as children are born literally daily, then the number to be supported will continue to grow. 5. You are spending $1,000,000,000 just to temporarily house and care for these refugees. The cost to provide permanent facilities will be astronomical. We demand an immediate cessation to this idiocy.
